Khortytsya Island

KHORTYTSYA - the largest island on the Dnieper River, the famous rich nature and the numerous archaeological discoveries since from the Scythians and Pechenegs eras until the time of the Cossacks, who in the early 16th century established a Cossack republic in the center of the island and named it Zaporozhye. Khortytsya Island still holds the echoes of its heroic Cossack past.

THE MUSEUM OF HISTORY AND NATIONAL COSSACKS RESERVE.
The Museum of Zaporizhzhya Cossacks on the island was opened 14.10.1983. Today, under the arches of the Museum is collected more than 30 000 items, and it covers the historical period from the Palaeolithic to the 19thcentury and the current era. Exposition has four complete dioramas. The designelements of the space itself: the granite plates, tight one to one, create the impression that visitors move in a cave, near the walls lie the silent relics.
Take a walking tour of the historical and cultural complex «Zaporizhzhya Sich», where the feature film «Taras Bulba» was filmed in 2007. The complex is builton the model of Cossack Sech: Cossack kuriens, Sich ataman house and church.
Now on the reserve hangar are 2 boats exhibited (Cossack gulls), found from the bottom of the Dnieper and restored almost completely.
